There are absolutely no side effects to trying conservative therapy first when dealing with incontinence. Taking the time to learn about your body and what muscles to contract will always benefit you in the long run. Learning your kegel exercises is just the first step, but also learning how your lower abdominals or transversus abdominus and multifidi muscles contract along with and enhance your pelvic floor contraction takes you even further on the road to restoring continence. Even your posture can effect the strength of your pelvic floor muscles. You owe it to yourself to find and use all the muscles of your pelvic girdle regardless of your choice of treatment in the long run.
